820 px) Charitable Giving Before Year-End: Tax Moves That Still Work The charitable donation tax deduction is changing for 2026, and December is when it counts.

Two things are new: people who take the standard deduction can finally deduct some giving, and people who itemize hit a new floor.

Whether you give $100 or $10,000, a few small timing choices before December 31 can change your bill.

Charitable Donation Tax Deduction 2026: What Is New Here is the short version of the charitable donation tax deduction 2026.

Non-itemizers can deduct up to $2,000 (or $1,000 if single) even when you do not itemize.

Itemizers can only deduct what exceeds 0.5% of 1,000 ( AGI.

And anyone in the top 37% bracket sees their benefit capped at 35 cents on the dollar.

The 60% of AGI limit for cash gifts to public charities stays permanent.

Above the Line Charitable Deduction and Charitable Deduction Without Itemizing The above the line charitable deduction is back, and it works as a charitable deduction without itemizing.

You claim it on top of the standard deduction, which is $16,100 single or $32,200 joint for 2026.

The $1,000 Charitable Deduction and the Standard Deduction The $1,000 charitable deduction standard deduction rule applies to cash gifts to qualifying public charities.

It does not cover clothes, household goods or other non-cash gifts, and it does not cover gifts to donor-advised funds or private foundations.

It also applies to your 2026 return, filed in 2027, not the 2025 return you already sent in.

If you give $1,000 and you are in the 22% bracket, that is roughly $220 saved.

The 0.5% AGI Floor for Itemizers The 0.5% AGI floor charitable rule only affects itemizers.

With an AGI of $100,000, the first $500 of giving does not count.

At $300,000 the first $1,500 does not count.

Amounts shut out by the floor can generally be carried forward.

To be honest, the floor is why bunching donations into a single year suddenly looks smarter.

This also applies to public charities, 0.5% of AGI floor donations of clothes and household goods, which only count if you itemize.

Donor Advised Fund Tax Deduction The donor advised fund tax deduction still exists, and it is useful for bunching: you give a big amount once, take the deduction in that year, and send grants to charities later.

A DAF gift is subject to the new floor and cap for itemizers, and it does not qualify for the 2,000 1,000/ non-itemizer deduction.

A DAF gift also has to be completed by December 31, so do not wait until the last week.

Qualified Charitable Distribution 2026 If you are 70½ or older, a qualified charitable distribution 2026 lets you send up to $111,000 directly from a traditional IRA to a charity.

It is not counted as taxable income, so the floor and cap do not apply, and it can count toward your required minimum distribution.
